Common Coverage Myths — Truth vs. Fiction

6 common misconceptions about mobile networks and coverage, and the truth behind each.

Myth #1: "More signal bars = faster internet"

Truth: Signal bars measure only the signal strength between your phone and the nearest tower — not internet speed or quality. You can have five bars but slow speed because the tower is congested with users. The reverse is also true: three bars of 5G may give you far higher speed than five bars of 4G.

Myth #2: "Weather doesn't affect signal"

Truth: Weather does affect signal, though not always in the ways people expect. Thunderstorms can interfere with signals. Heavy rain absorbs waves at some frequencies. In extremely hot regions like Qatar, heat shimmer can slightly affect the propagation of high-frequency waves like 5G mmWave.

Myth #3: "5G is dangerous to health"

Truth: There is no reliable scientific evidence proving that 5G networks pose a health risk. Emissions from 5G towers are "non-ionizing radiation" — meaning they don't have enough energy to alter the chemical structure of biological cells. The World Health Organization and international safety agencies continuously monitor and confirm the safety of this technology within established standards.

Myth #4: "Airplane mode then off improves signal"

Truth: This forces your phone to search for the network again, which may help if your phone is clinging to a weak signal from a distant tower instead of switching to a closer, stronger one. But it's not a signal "improvement" per se — it's simply restarting the connection process. The more effective solution is using "Manual network selection" in your phone's settings.

Myth #5: "Phone cases block signal"

Truth: Plastic or leather phone cases don't actually affect signal quality. The real problem may occur with cases featuring thick metallic layers, as some reflect radio waves. Choose a case free of metal sheets if you're in an area with weak signal.

Myth #6: "The newer the generation, the faster the speed"

Truth: A newer generation (5G) is faster in theory, but your actual experience depends on many factors: distance from the tower, number of users sharing the cell, phone type, and the frequency type used. You may get higher speed on 4G LTE in an area with dense coverage compared to 5G in an area with sparse coverage.
